Our firefighters are appointed from the Monroe County Civil Service Eligible List. This list is composed of candidates who pass the Open Competitive Firefighter Exam, which is offered by Monroe County every two years.
Interested candidates can apply online, by mail, or in person at the Monroe County Office Building located at 39 West Main Street in Rochester. You can also register for job alert e-mail notification through Monroe County Civil Service.
Candidates are selected based on score and go through a selection process that includes a medical exam, a psychological assessment, an oral interview, and a background check.
All candidates must be certified by New York state as an EMT and hold a valid drivers license prior to appointment.
Following appointment, candidates attend a New York State certified fire academy for initial training and certifications.
